Saturday morning I finally made it out to Olde Bostonian (www.oldbostonian.com), an architectural salvage place. They buy and sell pieces such as doors, light fixtures, windows, stained glass, etc. I don't have too many projects going on that need any of these pieces, but I was inspired for future projects. Windows, when laid flat, can make a great coffee table top. Doors hinged together can make a room-divider screen and light fixtures are always fun to change around. There were also a couple of stained glass pieces which would look good in the Watertown apartment. Next time I'll probably call ahead to see if they have any glass pieces so I can finally get my dining table replaced!
As soon as I got back from Olde Bostonian, I started in painting the hallway. As I mentioned earlier, I decided to paint the hallway red and leave a white box around the red barcodes (see the "Scan Here" post for pics). Painting the hallways white seemed like a good idea at first, but it just looked so empty and the black trim looked so horrible that I had to change it around. The red looks great and came out nicely...now all I have to do is repaint the trim :( I'm SUPER upset with myself for starting to paint it black. Had I not done that, I could have gotten away with not painting the trim for awhile. Now that I have to paint over the black part, it's going to be a big project. Since all the rooms in the house are off this hallway, I'll have to paint all the trim in the house in order to make it match from room to room...NOT fun! Oh well...at least I have a pretty red hallway!
I would post pics of the hallway but I still have yet to take the tape down from the barcodes so it doesn't look its best at the moment. Pics will be up tonight.
I'll also be adding a light to the end of the hallway. There's a light at the front door and nothing at the end of the hall so you kind of get lost in the darkness. There's no fixture there at the moment but there are two smoke detectors right next to each other. Since only one of them works and we really don't need two of them together, I'm going to take the broken one down and see what's underneath it. Hopefully I'll get lucky and find lighting wires tucked neatly in the ceiling and calling my name! We'll see how that goes.
After my hallway transformation, I'll be retackling the living room. I like the living room, but it doesn't flow with the rest of the house. It was originally going to encompass all the colors for the dining room and kitchen to add a nice flow, but somehow it turned out a lot more tame and subdued than I intended. I like the living room, just not in this house. The search is on for lighter, brighter accessories to make that room a little happier.
Other than that, not much happening. Both of my clients are laying low this week so I have a nice break to work on my place. Hopefully I get all the things done that I need to and don't get sucked in to TV!
