(Before...yuck!)
Finally I realized I was thinking too small. We needed something large to fill the space and set the tone for the whole room. That's when I saw this awesome piece on Ikea Hackers that was made using an Ikea Komplement hanger, wood, and paint.

Using that pic as inspiration, I made an Ikea art piece of my own! I went larger (6' x 4'), added random colors, and framed the piece out with this awesome molding that fit right in with our retro decor. Now I FINALLY have a piece that I LOVE!!! Who knew!?!
(After - yea!)
Awesome Idea!! I think I may be duplicating this idea with some aircraft parts. Looks great!!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome and kind of looks like your blog background. :P
ReplyDeleteBig improvement - good job!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's nice to finally have a room that I like. And you're right Drea, it does look like my blog background. I'm starting to think I have a polka dot addiction!
ReplyDeleteOut of aircraft parts? That would be awesome in a modern/industrial apartment. Send pics if you decide to make one...I'd love to see it :)
ReplyDeleteWould you be willing to share how you did it? What are the round pieces? How expensive was it to make?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! The circles are the Ikea Komplement hanger that's made to hold scarves. I spray painted it gold and then painted the wood behind it different colors. The hanger is only $8 and I used 3 of them so altogether it was a pretty cheap project. I think the wood trim I framed it out in was the most expensive part! Good luck with yours. Make sure to send pics! (Here's the link for the hanger: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70108912/)
DeleteWhat did you use to secure the hanger onto the board? Hot glue gun? Or liquid nails? I've replicated my own version and I love it but the last step for me is attaching the circles. Any advice?
ReplyDeleteI used staples because I wanted to be able to take it apart and use it all the pieces for something else when we moved or I got bored, whichever came first! Next time, I would use nails though since the staples were hard to make blend in. If you want something more permanent, Liquid Nails should be strong enough. Maybe add a few nails in the corners to reinforce. Good luck and send pictures!
